JBM Logistics Streamlines Orientation and Audits in One Stroke
Founded in 1996 and headquartered in Saskatoon, SK, JBM Logistics specializes in dry van and temperature-controlled freight services, offering truckload, less than truckload (LTL), and cross-docking operations. With a fleet of 45 tractors and 90 trailers, JBM is well-equipped to handle customers of all sizes without sacrificing a personal approach.
The team at JBM has also made a name for themselves with their ability to adapt to the evolving security landscape, especially when it comes to their cross-border operations. As members of programs like CTPAT/PIP, FAST and CSA, keeping their policies and people up to speed has been critical.
However, their training program was becoming a concern because it was slow, inefficient and unengaging. "I was struggling with the quality of our in-house training and onboarding of new employees," said Neil Campbell, JBM's Manager of Human Resources and Safety. "The messages were being lost. It was stale, outdated and frankly quite boring."
Not only that, Campbell also found that candidates were feeling stress and pressure from having to do training and exams in front of a trainer—something many people struggle with.
Making the turn
Knowing there had to be a better approach, Campbell connected with other safety managers for advice on a more engaging and efficient training experience: "I attended a conference many years ago and talked with other carriers. I talked about my concerns with training and how outdated we were back then. A safety manager with another carrier had told me about their relationship with CarriersEdge. That moment was transformative for our operation."
What he found was the right fit for his needs and his people— "The content was delivered from the comfort of the trainees' home. The pressure of training in front of trainers and taking exams was instantly removed. Trainees could complete the required training at their own pace, and arrive at our company doorstep prepared to complete onboarding."
Campbell was also able to improve the experience for his new recruits by offering flexibility and reduced stress: they could learn at their own pace and achieve compliance more effectively. "The onboarding process instantly became half the time needed, which reduced stress and pressure on new employees joining us," Campbell noted.
Untapped value
A good training platform should be able to deliver industry-specific content in a way that adds value to the business. Changing their training approach improved JBM Logistics' onboarding time and reduced some of the stress on new recruits, but it also came with an additional benefit.
Meeting the standards for security programs like CTPAT/PIP includes regular revalidation audits. "An important criterion for those programs is Security and Threat Awareness Training," Campbell explained. "I quickly realized that CarriersEdge training satisfies various audits and reviews from a variety of agencies without question. Whenever they inquire about how we train our employees and I mention that we use CarriersEdge, those audits or reviews move on to other topics. When CBP and CBSA are satisfied with CarriersEdge training to meet the Security Criteria, that is a value to me that can't be measured."
Industry knowledge
One of the things Campbell appreciates is the depth of industry knowledge in the content library. In fact, Campbell isn't shy when it comes to evaluating other training programs: "I have had competitors reach out to me, but it's been clear that others really don't compare to CarriersEdge when you consider how focused CarriersEdge has been to our industry: how they meet our needs, and the needs of our business partners and regulators. I recall one competitor reaching out to me recently. I asked about their Security Training and CTPAT/PIP content, and the salesperson did not know what that was."
That difference has been central to meeting JBM's training needs: "It is impossible to provide quality content if they don't understand the basic topics in our industry. CarriersEdge is part of our industry, they come from it, they understand it and are trusted to deliver a key component of it."
Driving a culture of safety and security isn't just about having the right policies and procedures. It's about understanding the industry, having the right people, and giving them the tools they need to be successful. JBM Logistics understands this and makes sure that they have the right training program in place to ensure their team is well- prepared. "I can't imagine what things would be like not being with CarriersEdge and I don't ever wish to go back to the days before working with them."
